Domain Hacking

by Paul Mobley on February 9, 2008

Have you ever used the social bookmarking service del.icio.us? Not only is it a cool service but it also has a cool name. I don’t know who started it first but it’s a technique that we now know as domain hacking.

My corporation owns about 50 different domain names (most are .com) but we’ve always wanted to own one of the more creative names. The truth is domain hacking is not easy. It requires a lot of trial and error using unconventional words and mostly international registrars. We were successful in getting the domain bureaucr.at and we’re planning on developing a site related to governmental affairs and small business. If you have any other suggestions, please post a comment.

With so few “great” domain names don’t forget to look into domain hacking as an alternative to the old standbys. In marketing, brand recognition is one of the pillars of success. These domains play by a different set of rules and stick in peoples minds. They’re unique. Unique is good.

Later in 2008 the .me domain will become available and I bet that the land grab will move pretty quickly. Maybe it started innocent enough but later beca.me a sche.me for foreign countries to earn extra inco.me … is that a cri.me? Who knows, we’ll have to wait for the outco.me

All five of the .me domains listed in the last paragraph of this post are registered. None are actually in use right now but I’ll be interested to see their development in the future. BTW, my corporation now owns over 370 domains (but bureaucr.at is still our only domain hack)
